Writing for the magazine

We'd love other CiS members to contribute to a future issue. If you follow the instructions below, your article is more like to to make it into print (or web page), and it will make our lives much easier too! Non-students are welcome to write too, but we'll make sure that a good proportion of the magazine is by student writers.

We also urgently need help with online layout and creating the pdf version – a time consuming but very satisfying job!

1. Let us know what you'd like to write about (). That way we can advise you about whether it will fit into a future issue, or if we think it will fit into the ethos of the magazine. Please explain your ideas in a couple of sentences, and the more the merrier – then we can pick the idea we like best!

2. Get writing! The style we're aiming for is conversational and informative – similar to a quality newspaper's magazine supplement. If you have copyright free photos or other images to supplement the text that would be fantastic, and don't forget to use subheadings You can include links – just put the whole link in brackets, and references or further reading – but as a list at the end – not footnotes. The only constraints are the extent of your imagination, the word limit and deadline for the issue. Enjoy!

2008 issues, and deadlines

  • Spring: Ideas that changed the world
  • Summer: Beginnings – of life, the universe and everything...
  • Autumn and Winter: Ideas welcome. We may do another life stories issue in the summer, so let us know if you liked it!

Types of pieces

Needless to say it should be on a topic relating to Science and Christianity, in line with CiS's statement of faith, and relevant.

  • News: up to 200 words on a recent event or issue in the news
  • Columns: up to 500 words on a current issue – can be informative, an opinion piece, or news based.
  • Reviews: up to 600 words on a book, film, website, play etc.
  • S&CB shorts: up to 1000 words on a recent Science and Christian Belief article. This needn't fit in with the theme, it could just be an article you think students would be particularly interested in!
  • Features: up to 1500 words. More in depth, on one issue.
