News: Dawkins and McGrath

Rising to second on the Amazon.com bestsellers list, Richard Dawkins' latest venture "The God Delusion" is a complete commercial success, despite a mixed critical reaction. Terry Eagleton's review in the London Review of Books compared Dawkins' grasp of theology to "someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds", while Nature's review of The God Delusion presents Dawkins as clumsily and offensively outside his sphere of knowledge.

Alistair McGrath, Professor of historical Theology at Oxford, and Principal of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, and Joanna Collicutt McGrath, lecturer in the psychology of religion at Heythrop College, University of London, have written an aptly named response "The Dawkins Delusion", addressing the arguments of Dawkins' book, went on sale this month. Some commentators would love to see a public debate between Alister McGrath and Dawkins, but at present this seems unlikely.
