Meetings

Meetings are held a few times every year in the Belfast area and the Dublin area.

On Monday 22 January 2007, Prof. Alan Hibbert (Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Queen's University Belfast) gave a talk entitled "Science and Christianity: An Uneasy Coupling?: A Mathematicians Perspective"

On Monday 30 October 2006, Dr. Graeme Finlay (University of Auckland, New Zealand) talked about Human Genetics and the Image of God at All Souls' Church, Elmwood Avenue, Belfast. Graeme began his presentation by reflecting on the fact that the scientific understanding of evolution (and particularly the evolution of humanity) and the biblical understanding of humanity as a creature of God are often held to be incompatible. By highlighting his view that the persistence of such attitudes is deeply ironic, Graeme went on to explain that genomic science has established unequivocally the trajectory of our evolutionary past. He also went on to demonstrate that biblical theology is fully congruent with the story of our biological origins as revealed by genetics. That the story of our biological origins is only a part of the story of our humanisation was explored in detail by Graeme. He concluded by explaining that the Bible describes our full humanity in terms of the Image of God, a concept that encompasses our physicality, but includes the wonder of our relationality.

Previous open debates include "Evolution, Creationism and Intelligent Design".

Previous presentations include "Claiming Back Genesis From the Creationists: Reading The Bible From An Environmental Perspective" by Rev Dr Ron Elsdon.
