Christians In Science
 

We are very grateful to welcome the following speakers and session chairs to our conference. They represent a diverse mix of scientists, theologians and clinicians from a wide variety of specialities.

Speakers

Professor John Hedley Brooke is a well known historian of science, specialising in the history of the relationship between science and religion. He is the current president of both the International Society for Science and Religion and the Science and Religion Forum.

Wilson Poon is currently Professor of Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Edinburgh. As well as being a Fellow of both the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Edinburgh he is also a member of the Doctrine Committee of the Scottish Episcopal Church.

Michael Northcott is Professor of Ethics in the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh. He speaks widely to both academic and non-academic audiences with a focus on ecology and Christian theology. He has also recently co-edited a new book collection dealing with theology within the evolutionary context.

Dr. Michael DeLashmutt is Lecturer in the Study of the Christian Church in the Department of Theology at the University of Exeter. He is interested in understanding how the Church interacts with wider society and also in forging active links between academic theology and the wider Church.

Dr. Rob Waller is a Consultant Psychiatrist for NHS Lothian. Rob is also the Director of Mind and Soul, an organisation interested in Christianity and mental health.

Dr. Christopher Southgate is a lecturer in the Department of Theology at the University of Exeter. In addition to being a poet he originally comes from a biochemistry background and has published several books on the interaction between science and theology including most recently The Groaning of Creation.

Session Chairs

Professor Eric Priest holds the Gregory Chair of Mathematics at the University of St. Andrews and is an international known expert in solar physics. He is also one of the organisers of the highly successful James Gregory series of lectures on science and religion held at St. Andrews.

Mrs. Clare Foster is a PhD student in Cell Biology at the University of Durham. A previous organiser of both the Durham local Christians in Science group and previous Northern Conferences she is currently the student representative on the Christians in Science national committee.

Mr. Perry Enever is the Development Officer for Christians in Science.

Organising Committee

Dr. Neville Cobbe is a research geneticist who has recently moved to a new academic position in Liverpool from Edinburgh. Neville is also active in various writings involving Christianity and science with a focus on bioethics and biomedicine.

Miss Sophie Fairbank works for both the Woodlands Trust and A Rocha, a Christian environmental organisation.

Mr. Gavin Merrifield is a researcher in Medical Physics at the University of Edinburgh working in biomedical research. With Neville he is co-chair of the Edinburgh Christians in Science group. Gavin is interested in the relationship between Christianity and emerging technologies and discoveries.
