Highfield Lecture: The Big Ego Trip
Speaker: Professor Glyn Harrison
Because of a link between mental health problems and low self-worth, the self-esteem movement campaigned to boost self-worth in schools and communities, and there has been an explosion of self-help resources. Glyn will show there is little evidence that any of this actually works, and with growing cultural narcissism, it may be causing more harm than good. He believes that personal resilience and true fulfilment come from seeing ourselves as God’s image bearers, called to play our part in a story bigger than “me”. Glyn Harrison is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Bristol, where he was a practising consultant psychiatrist and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. He speaks widely on issues of faith and psychology, brain science and psychiatry, and is author of The Big Ego Trip.
